Doberman's: My NEW SPOT!

Cajun and Creole foods are some foods that Houston really does well; there is not a shortage of Cajun and Creole restaurants. For God's sake, Houston is referred to as "Louisiana West." This type of cuisine is partly what makes Houston's food scene unique, and it's one of my top 5 cuisines in the city. When I was referred to Doberman's Bar & Grill, a new black-owned Cajun restaurant, I knew I had to try it for myself. Let me take you on a journey to this Louisiana-style restaurant...

LOCATION

Doberman's Bar & Grill is located in the Washington Avenue Corridor between Durham Drive and Shepherd Drive; slow down because the gray building is located next to a gigantic apartment complex, and you can miss it, if you're not paying close attention. Once you've arrived, you're met with a medium-sized patio with a large TV, which is perfect for those who like to eat outside. Inside, the space is set up like a man cave. There are stained wood paneling throughout, black high tables and booths, and several pictures of Dobermans and sports teams; there's even cigar service. For my beer lovers, the bar has a huge selection of beer. Sounds good, right?

The vibe is very chilled and laid-back with a fun twist; it's so Houston. The bartenders were having a dance contest; it was quite an experience watching them. Chris, the owner with Louisiana roots, makes sure he greets and introduces himself to his patrons. He's quite a character, who jokes a lot. LOL. He's knowledgeable and ensures that his patrons are greatly served.

FOOD

Bruuuuuuuuh! The food is on point! I'm convinced that Big Mama is back there in the kitchen doing her thang!

Y'all already know that I was overwhelmed when looking at the menu. It didn't have a lot of food like I had preferred, but beggars can't be choosers because I was hangry. LOL. Lo and behold, I ordered the "Doberman's Trinity." This meal included my choice of any 3 appetizers on the menu. Thus, I had chosen Cajun Catfish Fries, Bang Bang Tacos, and Jerk Chicken and Yellow Rice Egg Rolls.

First, as far as presentation, the Cajun Catfish Fries weren't what I expected, but they blew my mind. This appetizer includes about twelve Cajun and seasoned fried catfish fillets on top of freshly hand-cut fries. The catfish fillets took me back to Fried Fish Fridays in Alabama; they were softly fried and had just come out the grease. The fries took me back to when my great aunt cooked me hand-cut fries when I was little; they were lightly salted and were left with some of their potato skin exposed.

Second, the Bang Bang Tacos were top-notch and would give Torchy's Tacos and Velvet Tacos runs for their money. The two tacos were comprised of hand battered crispy shrimp that were topped with red cabbage slaw and pico and tossed in bang bang sauce inside of flour tortillas. The crunchiness from the slaw and battered shrimp and the sweetness from the bang bang sauce were perfect together.

Third, the four Jerk Chicken and Yellow Rice Egg Rolls took me out! The egg rolls included grilled jerk chicken and spicy yellow rice that were served with jalapenos ranch. The egg rolls were a weird but a great blend of spicy and sweet. They were not as "crunchy" as your typical Asian-style egg rolls; they were much softer.

As y'all already know, I had a Sprite for my beverage (not pictured).

CONCLUSION

Doberman's Bar & Grill. Doberman's Bar & Grill. Doberman's Bar & Grill is my new spot! Everything from the vibes to the foods to the portions to the service to the prices exceeded my expectations. The Doberman's Trinity was $15, and I'd gotten a TON of food; my Sprite was $1.50. Oh yes, I will be back, especially to try their brunch.

Based on my experience, Doberman's Bar & Grill gets 5 stars (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) from me!
