TOP BLACK RESTAURANTS IN HOUSTON

Houston has one of the best black food scenes in the country; the scene has the variety and the overabundance that many people seek, and it’s only getting better. Even though Houston has a reputable food scene, there are several restaurants that are just exceptional. Out of all the outstanding black restaurants in Houston, there are spots, picked by my Instagram followers and I over time, that seldom get bad reviews and complaints. The restaurants were picked by an arbitrary yet important checklist:

  1. TASTE - Of course, the restaurants’ food have to taste amazing. Black people are known for our good food, so it’s imperative that our restaurants score perfectly on taste.

  2. PRICE - Restaurants can unfairly charge an arm and a leg for food nowadays. We as customers want to enjoy a good meal without paying ridiculous prices; food should be enjoyed by everyone of all financial demographics. Just because a restaurant has expensive food doesn’t mean that the food is on point.

  3. CUSTOMER SERVICE - Black restaurants are unjustly known for having bad customer service, as if other restaurants don’t suffer from this action. Most of us customers already have a chip on our shoulders, when patronizing black restaurants due to the lack of good customer service reputation. Restaurants that help to change this narrative deserve to be praised.

  4. CLEANLINESS - The next thing to Godliness is cleanliness; if the restaurants aren’t cleaned, then it’s hard for anyone to patronize those entities. Eating in a comfortable and a cozy environment that focuses on cleanliness is second to none.

  5. PRESENTATION - We as customers eat with our eyes. If our food isn’t sexy, then we don’t want it. Women, especially, are very much so into the presentation of food; organization and pretty colors are important to them. As men, we like to see hefty sized plates.

  6. BLACK COOKS/AUTHENTICITY - Restaurants’ having black (and RELIABLE) cooks are important from a black economics, a cultural, and an authentic perspective. Yes, Hispanic cooks can follow a recipe, but they lack the cultural experiences, elements, and nuances that give our food the extra flavor from our ancestors. We want our food to taste like grandma made it.
