Egyptian Street Food off MLK

Third Ward, or the “Tre” to native Houstonians, is known for its rich African American culture, as mentioned in a previous post. Several local African American owned mom and pop businesses dot the landscape in this cultural part of Houston. However, take a stroll down MLK Blvd past Griggs Road, and you will find something international and unique on this side of town: MediGrill, a Mediterranean/Egyptian restaurant that specializes in savory street food. Let me take you on a journey to this special little place in Third Ward...

LOCATION

Conveniently located in Houston’s historic Third Ward, MediGrill can’t be missed with it’s bright yellow sign. It’s kind of situated in an area that can be iffy as far as crime, but I’ve not had any problems when I’d patronized the business. The restaurant can definitely be labeled as a hole-in-the-wall, so you know the food is going to be good: I’m a witness! It’s a small nook that bursts out so many flavorful dishes and snacks.

Also, MediGrill prides itself on customer service. Mou, the friendly owner from Egypt, takes his time to explain the menu to patrons; he will help you to make the best food decision.

If you're not into Mediterranean food, the restaurant serves traditional American snacks to serve the general population, such as burgers, Philly Cheese Steaks, and fried fish. This place has it all!

FOOD

Now, this is the part you’ve been waiting to read. The food, with its huge portions and cheap prices, was more than what was anticipated. Accompanied by Shan and my college friend, Chelzea, I was able to try more dishes than my own. Starting with Chelzea, she ordered NYC Gyro over Rice; the meal included seasoned gyro atop flavorful yellow rice with a side of a fresh salad and hummus.

Shan, the pescatarian, customized her meal to fit her dietary needs. She ordered the NYC Gyro over Rice too but was able to subsitute gyro for grilled shrimp. She added two slices of fried fish and more hummus; if you’re from the South and are familiar with fried fish, then you’d be pleasantly satisfied with Medi Grill’s fish because it was fried like what you’re used to on Fish Fry Fridays.

On to my meal...I decided to try something less heavy, since I was going to get crawfish later on. My choice was the Chicken Shawarma Wrap with a side of fries. Of course, I’d asked to include extra fries inside of the wrap, similarly to how it's eaten on the streets of the Mediterranean, especially Egypt. The wrap included thinly sliced cuts of seasoned chicken, hummus, pickles, tahini, onions, and other types of vegetables rolled into a large piece of flatbread. The wrap was a savory medley of flavor that makes you do the "Bankhead Bounce." LOL.

For our drinks, we all had daiquiris from nearby Nawlins D-Shop.

Grilled Shrimp over Rice - $11.99, NYC Gyro over Rice - $6.99, and Chicken Shawarma Wrap - $5.99

Grilled Shrimp over Rice - $11.99, NYC Gyro over Rice - $6.99, and Chicken Shawarma Wrap - $5.99

CONCLUSION

Medi Grill is where it's at: big portions, cheap prices, convenient location, and great customer service! Chelzea's meal (NYC Gyro over Rice) was $6.99, Shan's meal (Grilled Shrimp over Rice with a side of two fish and extra hummus) was $11.99, and my meal (Chicken Shawarma Wrap with fries inside) was $5.99. We all were extremely satisfied with this choice of the weekend. Definitely give Medi Grill a try; Mou and his crew, also, cater events!

All in all, I give this special place 5 stars (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)!
